DEN Geocaching Day

DEN Geocaching Day
Today is the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) Spring Geocaching Day. Groups of teachers from all over the country get together to geocache! The group that Cindy and I organized geocached in West Bloomfield. It rained the whole time, but that didn't stop us. A fun time!

Webcam Cache

Webcam Cache
This was a fun geocache... You go to the set of coordinates and look for a webcam. Gina and I looked around and found the webcam placed high on the wall of the Calvin College Library. The challenge was to find a way to take a picture from the webcam. Gina brought her netbook and took this webcam photo of us.

First Time Out with New GPS

First Time Out with New GPS!
I just got a new GPS and I couldn't wait for a sunny day to try it out. It's a Garmin dTrex Hcx. Worked like a charm for this cache, but my geodaughter and I did not find another. What a great way to spend Mothers' Day. Thanks, Lisa!

Geocaching at Massanutten Mountain

Geocaching at Massanutten Mountain
It was a beautiful evening for a hike and I managed to talk Mark into going geocaching with me (a hobby of mine that he doesn't appreciate). We took a trail at the top of Massanutten Mountain and the view was spectacular! Others we met on the trail bumped into some coyotes ,but we didn't see any. We picked up two caches, though!

Winter Geocaching

Winter Geocaching
It's an unseasonably warm day today (45 degrees), so we headed out to the park to grab a few geocaches. The warm temp made it a bit difficult, as the snow turned into a heavy slush. It didn't matter that our pants and shoes were soaked when we returned; it was fun to get out!

The turkey was in the oven and the TV was tuned into the Lions' game... we thought it was a good time to go geocaching. This one was a fun, sneaky hide. Happy Thanksgiving! Photo by Bill Church.

I've hunted for this multi-cache with a friend probably seven different times. Turns out the owner gave some bad directions and the final coordinates were missing, which is why we couldn't find it. The owner apologized and sent better directions along with the final coordinates and we were able to find it without too much trouble. I don't think one person could have managed to get this down alone, it was not easy! I'm so glad to have finally found this one.

I saw this plant with clustered red berries at Dodge Park in Commerce Twp, Michigan. I had no idea what it was, but discovered after a 30 second Google search (key words: wild plant with red berries) that it is Jack in the Pulpit. Read about it on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arisaema_triphyllum.

I hid my first geocache in this park. It has a key chain theme (leave a key chain, take a key chain). It is currently being reviewed by a geocaching.com volunteer reviewer. This is so fun!

Today has been a gorgeous day in SE Michigan. Temps in early 70s and sunny; a great day for geocaching! We found three caches and enjoyed the scenery while getting some great exercise. This photo was taken at the Russell Bridge in the Proud Lake Recreation Area, Commerce Twp, Michigan.

May 30, 2009

Today was the Discovery Educator Network Geocaching Day. 22 teams across the nation met to geocache together. The Michigan DEN had two teams: one in Commerce and the other in Battle Creek/Kalamazoo. The Commerce team had a blast! We found 5 caches and hiked some beautiful trails in Proud Lake Recreation Area. We saw snakes, spiders, frogs, herons, and of course lots of mosquitos. We nearly lost a couple of teachers who wandered off, but we found them before too long. Several of the team were newbies, and now I think they are hooked. It was a fun day of networking, learning together, with great exercise for all. Our travel bug has been planted and we hope it travels very soon!
